Mike Stein has been casting his curious eye over Long Island and elsewhere since he first picked up that magical light-gathering device known as a camera. While some photographers travel to the ends of the earth in search of pictures, Mike enjoys looking for subjects close to home.
Born and raised in Brooklyn, Mike’s native turf is familiar yet mysterious. Author Thomas Wolfe once wrote, "Only the dead know Brooklyn." That may be true, but Mike hasn't given up trying. As a Long Islander, he’s discovered it’s more than endless suburban sprawl. Past strip malls and neat neighborhoods are light-filled vistas and surprising contrasts between civilization and nature.
Mike has been a photojournalist, newspaper editor and transportation business owner. But looking for pictures will always hold an irresistible allure. As his favorite, the noted documentary photographer Walker Evans said: “It’s as though there’s a wonderful secret in a certain place and only I can capture it; only at this moment, and only me.”
